Single SEX training

Link to this post 21 Oct 11

As a trainer I've been asked by a client to deliver two session on the same subject. One to group of females and one to group of male staff.

The reason being that the females feel intimidated by the males and not able to speak openly.

Any thoughts on what I should do?

Not being funny, Janey...but what's the problem? Surely it's just about doing what the customer wants!

Wouldn't dispute with them to much they may look to another provider!

Paul, I don't think its as straight forward as that.

I think yes you should always respect the customers wishes, but i think there is a wider issue here.

Personally i think the thought of single sex anything is divisive..and not helpful in any circumstances. Whether its training or networking meetings...surely there has to be more gain be including all?..not excluding?

From a training point of view it's down to the facilitator to ensure all feel they are listened to and given fair opportunity to contribute. it's their responsibility to create the right environment.

If they don't feel that then the trainer or facilitator hasn't done their job well enough.

Paul...I think that's a very short sighted view...yes I could become a sheep to the client and just deliver how and what they want...but I'm afraid that wouldn't sit well with me.

Lee...I have to disagree as there are times when its appropriate for women only groups. Networking is a great example...I'm a member of a few women only groups and we come together as a group of girls and feel less intimidated and able to support each other better than when we're with the boys...so not divisive at all. Besides you men have your boys only clubs!

I can relate this to the training room..just not experienced it as yet and was wondering what should be aware of.

Not short sighted at all Janey...Just realistic! It's hard enough to get business these days in any industry...would you really turn it down on your principles? Maybe you're running a lifestyle business...and not dependant on revenue? Happy knowing that hubby is main bread winner?

You mention boys only clubs? That's a bit of an outdated concept don't you think? C'mon...we all know these days women are the only ones allowed to get away with exclusive inequality groups in the name of networking!

Imaging the uproar if I set up a male only business club?!!

But Paul men already have so many established ways of doing business with each other...why are you worried about us girls setting up our own?
