Choosing the right Coach

Link to this post 09 Oct 11

Hi all,

Interested to learn how people choose (or get chosen as) a business Coach and what makes for a 'good fit'?

Is it based on CV? Qualifications? Relevant experience? HR departments recommendations?

Or in your experience is it all about the 'feel right' aspect and first impressions that come from initial meetings?

Or is it a combination of all of these?

How do you chose the perfect coach?

Lee, it should be on the relationship...however its more often on the say so of HR or line manager!

And as a result often doesn't work!

Hi Lee,
In the ideal world, the perfect coach will be someone who enjoys working with people, has the time to spend with them and believes that he/she can make an impact on their performance. In my opinion coaching is not for everyone, it should not be a job or assignment given by the HR. Although HR could play the role of organizing the framework and in some situations make sure that people who are in need of coaching are being coached.
Being a senior manager or having a good CV does not qualify someone to be a coach. The right coach should possess certain qualities. Also the right coach may differ from one person to another and even for the same person in different phases in his/her career. Sometimes one needs to have a functional coach or a coach who can help in a career move, etc. With every situation the expectations and the objectives of having this coach will differ. In this sense your criteria will change and hopefully then one can find the perfect coach!

That's a good point Miral, the fact that the coach may differ depending on the requirement.

Curious how heavily are organisation investing in utilising 'internal' knowledge and experience by using coaches and mentors of existing staff?

and do they give training to these internal mentors? In my experience they may have the experience or networks...but how they act as the mentor or coach means the benefits aren't captured.
